Via welcomes the repeal of the Vagrancy Act

We welcome the Government’s repeal of the Vagrancy Act this week, marking the end of legislation that has criminalised people for sleeping rough for more than 200 years.

Every day, our teams support people affected by drug or alcohol dependence and we work alongside many individuals who are experiencing homelessness.

Through our specialist rough sleeping Inroads teams in Camden and Islington and across our community services, we know that lasting change happens when people are met with compassion and practical support, not punishment.  Many people who sleep rough face multiple and complex challenges, such as trauma and poor mental and physical health.

At Via, we remain committed to reaching people wherever they are – building trust and helping individuals access the support they need to improve their health and wellbeing and rebuild their lives.

We hope this announcement will not only remove an outdated piece of legislation but also help reduce the stigma around rough sleeping, encouraging more people to seek help without fear of being judged or criminalised.
